Kyle Long Retires

Chicago Bears Offensive Guard had announced that he is retiring from the National Football League, ending a seven-year career spent entirely in the Windy City.  He made the announcement on Twitter. Playing his college ball at Oregon, Long was drafted by Chicago 20thoverall in 2013.  The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer, Howie Long, and brother of former NFL star, Chris Long, made an immediate impact, going to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, and he would repeat that accolade in 2014 and 2015. Long’s career stalled when a brutal ankle injury cost him half of the 2016 season and two games…

Regular visitors of Notinhalloffame.com know that we are slowly working on the top 50 of every major team in the NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB. Once that is done, we intend to look at how each team honor their past players, coaches and executives.  As such, it is news to us that the New York Islanders will be retiring the numbers of John Tonelli and Butch Goring this year. John Tonelli played his first three seasons in pro hockey with the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association, and he debuted on Long Island for the 1978-79 season.  The Left Wing played there for…

RIP: David Stern

It is a very sad day in the world of Basketball, as former NBA Commissioner, David Stern, passed away today at the age of 77. Stern was first involved in the NBA in 1966, when he was hired by the law firm that represented the league.  In 1978, he was officially hired by the NBA, as he became General Counsel under the then Commissioner, Larry O’Brien.  He would then take over for O’Brien on February 1, 1984.   Stern would serve in this capacity for precisely 30 years.  Under his tenure, the NBA grew by seven teams, and expanded into Canada.  He oversaw the expansion…
While he last played in the NBA in 2018, Zach Randolph has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball. Playing his college ball at Michigan State, “Z-Bo” was the 19thOverall Pick in 2001, when he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers.  The Power Forward became a fulltime starter in his third year (2003-04), where he broke out with a double-double season of 20.1 Points and 10.5 Rebounds per Game. For his efforts, he would win the NBA Most Improved Player of the Year.   Similar seasons followed, and he was traded to the New York Knicks on a draft day deal in…
As much as we love Halls of Fame, we have often been critical about the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.  One of our criticisms is that the powers that be in Springfield are not very transparent, and does not even provide even the briefest bios of their many candidates.  We are going to provide more context those who will be considered for Hall of Fame Class of 2020.   North America Committee Nominations: Rick Adelman(Coach):  Adelman played eight years in the NBA, and would become the Head Coach of Chemekata CC in 1977.  He served in that role until 1983, when he joined the Portland…
In April, we did our standard recap where we wished a player the best in their post-playing endeavors, with the individual person in question being Marshawn Lynch.  Let’s retract that as “Beast Mode” is back. Lynch resigned with the Seattle Seahawks yesterday, and the five-time Pro Bowl Selection comes back with “unfinished business” as he said in a recent YouTube video.   We know what the unfinished business is.  At Super Bowl XLIX, the Seahawks were driving late in the game and were on the one-yard line.  It was expected that Lynch would get the ball, but instead a passing play was called that resulted…
The NFL season is not yet over, but we have a significant retirement that was announced today.  Darren Sproles of the Philadelphia Eagles, who is out for the rest of the season with a hip injury, announced that he will officially call it a career. A fourth round pick from Kansas State in 2005, Sproles was mostly used as a Kick Returner as a rookie.  He missed all of 2006 due to an ankle injury, and returned as the team’s primary returner, a role he held until 2010.  The Chargers would gradually use him more in their offense, and he would see a…
We have another retirement in Baseball to look at as Ian Kinsler has announced that he is retiring from the game.  The San Diego Padre cited issues with a cervical disk that ended his 2018 season. The Second Baseman began his Major League career in 2006 with the Texas Rangers, where he finished seventh in Rookie of the Year voting.  Kinsler played for Texas until 2013, and he would be named an All-Star on three occasions, and twice he had 30 Home Runs campaigns for the Rangers.  He joined the Detroit Tigers for the 2014 Season, and went to his fourth All-Star Game.  With…
