RIP: Del Shofner

It was announced today that Del Shofner passed away in his home.  He was 85 years old. Playing his college ball at Baylor, the Los Angeles Rams chose Shofner with the 11thpick overall in the 1957 Draft.  Shofner was used mostly as a Defensive End as a rookie, but he would play a lot more on the offensive side of the ball afterward.  He would be a First Team All-Pro in both 1958 and 1959 and won the Receiving Yards Title in the former year with 1,097 Yards.   Shofner joined the New York Giants in 1961, and that year, and the two seasons…
Yes, we know that this is taking a while! As many of you know, we here at Notinhalloffame.com are slowly generating the 50 of each major North American sports team.  We have a new one to unveil today, that of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Pittsburgh Penguins were part of the first wave of expansion in 1967, and they were off to a horrible start.  When they did make the playoffs, they were often bounced early, and fans grew tired. By 1983, the Penguins were close to folding or relocation, but then the words happened:  Mario Lemieux. Lemieux became an instant superstar and a…
We have another huge day at Notinhalloffame.com as the College Football Hall of Fame has announced the Class of 2020. Seventeen former players and two former Coaches will be induced on December 8, at the New York Hilton.  To become eligible as a player, that individual must have been a First Team All-American and have last played his college ball ten years ago.  In addition, they must have played their last year in college at least 50 years ago (1970.). As for the Coaches, they become eligible when three years after they retired or are 70 years old. The College Football Hall…
This is a surprise to absolutely nobody. Two months ago, the World Golf Hall of Fame altered the age threshold for induction from 50 to 45.   Who is turning 45 this year? Tiger Woods. Who was a Finalist this year? Tiger Woods. Who is the lone inductee this year?  Tiger Woods. As a golfer, Woods has done it all.    He is an 11-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, he has 93 worldwide tour wins, with 15 majors.  Woods is without question the biggest name the sport has ever had, and he raised the profile of the game immensely.   While his first year of…
We have a very significant retirement to discuss in the world of Pro Football as Marshal Yanda will be announcing his retirement on Wednesday. A third round pick from Iowa, Yanda would start 12 of his 16 Games as a rookie and he would be a permanent fixture on the right side of the line from 2010 until his retirement in 2019. Yanda went to his first Pro Bowl in 2011, and he would go to eight in total. A two-time First Team All-Pro, Yanda was also a Second Team Selection five times.  His presence on the O-Line helped the Ravens win…
It is a sad day for the Montreal Canadiens and the world of hockey as it was announced today that Henri Richard passed away at the age of 84. The younger brother of Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Henri was nicknamed the “Pocket Rocket” in reference to his small stature.  While he may have played part of his career in his brother’s shadow, the younger Richard was a superstar in his own right.   Playing his entire 20-year career with the Canadiens, Richard debuted in 1955-56, and two years later he would lead the NHL in Assists.  That season, the Centre would earn a First…
Regular visitors of Notinhalloffame.com know that we are slowly working on the top 50 of every major team in the NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB. Once that is done, we intend to look at how each team honor their past players, coaches and executives.  As such, it is news to us that the New York Mets will be retiring the #36 of Jerry Koosman this season. Koosman made his major league debut with the Mets in 1967, and in the following season, he was an All-Star with a 19-12 record and a 2.08 ERA.  He followed that with a 17-9 campaign with a…
It seems that the more lists we create, the more we have to continue to update them.   That sounded pretty obvious didn’t it?  Of course, we have to, and we love it! Today, we have the unveiling of our 2021 version of the Notinhalloffame.com football list.  Only a few months ago, we expanded our list to 300, and this is the number that we are going to keep it firm at.  Last season, the National Football League celebrated its 100thAnniversary, and to coincide with the landmark, the Pro Football Hall of Fame added 15 new members, 10 of which were former players.  In…
Last night on WWE Backstage, it was announced that John Bradshaw Layfield will be entering the WWE Hall of Fame this year. After beginning his wresting career in 1992, Layfield signed with the WWE in 1995 as Justin “Hawk” Bradshaw, where the Texan was in full cowboy gimmick similar to Stan Hansen.  The character would see television time, but it was a lower-card gimmick that did nothing more than have a forgettable feud with Savio Vega.   In early 1997, Bradshaw became “Blackjack Bradshaw” and formed the new Blackjacks with Barry Windham.  The team went nowhere, and Bradshaw would be a single again,…
Yes, we know that this is taking a while! As many of you know, we here at Notinhalloffame.com are slowly generating the 50 of each major North American sports team.  We have a new one to unveil today, that of the Colorado Avalanche.  Debuting as the Quebec Nordiques in 1972 in the World Hockey Association, they would become one of the most successful teams in the league.  The Nordiques won the Avco Cup in 1977, and they would be one of four franchises that would be absorbed into the NHL in 1979.  Despite having some good players in Michel Goulet and Peter Stastny,…
