The Bronx Bombers were always known for their sluggers but amidst the Mantles and the Maris’ there was Whitey Ford, “The Chairman of the Board”.

The leader of the Yankees’ pitching staff for years, Whitey Ford was a good strikeout pitcher even though he was not known for having an overwhelming fastball.  What he did have was incredible control and poise under pressure.  Ford would win the Cy Young Award in 1961 and helped the Yanks win the World Series six times, one of which also saw him win the World Series MVP…which of course was in 1961!

Ford would be named an All-Star ten times and won two ERA Titles. In 1974, He would enter the Baseball Hall of Fame in his second year of eligibility, and his #16 was retired by the team the same year.
