On Larry Dierker’s 18th, he made his MLB debut and struck out Willie Mays.
He would go on to have a very good career, spending all but his final season with Houston. Dierker would become the first 20 game-winner in Astros history (1969) and was a two-time All-Star going 137 and 117 with 1,487 Strikeouts for the team over 13 seasons. Following his playing career, Dierker broadcasted for the team for twenty years, and would also serve as their Manager for four years. The Astros retired his number 49 in 2002, a year after his managing career ended. The Astros named Dierker as one of the names in their first Hall of Fame class.
