While Al Kaline was not named the greatest Detroit Tiger of all-time, Al Kaline was the player who would be referred to as “Mr. Tiger”.
Kaline, who will likely go down as the most popular Tiger ever, was a prolific hitter who spent his entire in Detroit. Kaline could do almost anything. He was an 18-time All-Star and member of the 3,000 Hit Club, a possessor of 399 Home Runs, and a World Series Championship in 1968.
The first ballot (1980) Hall of Famer finished three times in the top three in MVP voting and was equally adept in his fielding skill as he was with his power.
Kaline may not have been as good as Ty Cobb but he was “Mr. Tiger”, a moniker that is perfect for him. He would later broadcast for the team and served as a team executive. The TIgers retired his number 6 in 1980.
