Playing his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds, Mario Soto brought a sweet fastball complimented with a devastating change up that helped him rack up a lot of wins in the 80’s. Soto would probably have accumulated more wins had he had more offensive support but the three time All Star was still named the National League Cy Young runner up in 1983.
Soto would finish in the top ten in Cy Young voting three more times and would also lead the NL in WHIP once, SO/9 twice and SO/BB once. As good as he was, Soto would probably have been more celebrated had he played for a stronger team through the mid-80’s, though his fiery temper often put him in the news regardless of how well his team was playing!
Soto retired with an even 100 Wins against 92 Losses with 1,449 Strikeouts, and became a 2001 Reds Hall of Fame inductee.
